The term “New Wave” itself has been a source of much confusion and controversy. It was used in 1976 in the UK by punk magazines, and then by the professional music press. In a November 1976 article in Melody Maker, Caroline Coon used Malcolm McLaren’s term “New Wave” to designate music by bands not exactly punk, but related and part of the same musical scene. For a period of time in 1976 and 1977 the two terms were interchangeable. By the end of 1977, “New Wave” had replaced “Punk” as the definition for new underground music in the UK.
Well forgive the pun for a start. But, I do like the thought of some slightly anarchic boadshort behavior this summer. Just simply going against the grain, or fashion rather more. There is no excuse for following the crowd, neither in the water or out. I really hope we see some extraordinary use of our ‘canvas’…..

You may well be wondering what’s happened to the ‘face’ of our blog? Quite simply as we prepare for launch, we have removed the ‘About’ section and the descriptive ‘Masthead’ and streamlined the style to compliment the look and feel of the NEW site. Post launch, we will be integrated to the main site and continuing to Faceblog…Twitbook…Spacetube etc….

“My most exciting swim find of late is the website Shortomatic.com, where starting in February you can actually design your very own pair of well-made, one-of-a-kind board shorts with whatever prints and colors you would like for just $129!! That’s slightly more expensive than a pair at the mall, but certainly not as pricey as the designer versions that will be selling come Spring! Inspired by classic Hawaiian prints, the lovely pair of shorts above were customized for us for a shoot”.

It’s California, there’s a week of torrential rain predicted, oh and a Tornado! Meanwhile, we receive word from intrepid surfer Paul that he is poking around for a decent wave down in Mexico.
He sports a fine pair of ‘Scream’ shorts, featuring coincidentally, the face of his designer wife Kim. These shorts seem to be consistently in the top 10, prior to launch, which is now only days away.

Well for all the celebrations of Woodstock’s anniversary, we haven’t seen any ‘peace’ designs on our rack. This design was produced before Christmas at the PS Arts event, using tiny square swatches of an antique Hawaiian shirt. The result has a ‘painted’ feel and was in fact designed and produced by a female fan of Shortomatic. These will hopefully make their way into our gallery and made available for all!
